The Namibian Police and the City of Windhoek have issued a stern warning to residents on the illegal use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
In a public notice, the police cautioned that fireworks are explosives and, therefore, may cause annoyance, injury and damage to property.
“The exploding of fireworks in streets, public places or on any land within a local authority area, except for the purpose of a public display operated by experts, is unlawful and could result in penalties,” reads the notice.
City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya on Monday said the municipality is the only licenced body authorised to host a fireworks display, which will be done during the annual New Year’s celebration taking place at the City of Windhoek head office parking lot on Tuesday.
“Towards the end of the show, we will have our fireworks. Unfortunately, the fireworks are entrusted only to us because they need to be set off in a controlled and safe environment by experts,” Amutenya said.
She stressed that residents who have already purchased fireworks are prohibited from setting them off, as doing so is illegal and may result in fines.
“Illegal fireworks cause significant distress, especially to domestic animals like dogs, so if you have already bought fireworks, don’t set them off.
It’s illegal and could lead to penalties. If you haven’t bought any – save your money, we will handle it for you.”
The New Year’s celebration kicks off at 14h00 and will feature performances by 16 local artists.
Amutenya encouraged residents to show up early and enjoy the full line-up of performances.
“We’re not revealing who will close off the show or help us transition into 2025 because people often show up only when their favourite artists are scheduled to perform. We want everyone to be present from the beginning, so each artist feels they are performing for a full and engaged audience,” Amutenya said.
The celebration will also feature a kiddies’ corner, which opens alongside the first performance at 14h00, and offers activities for younger attendees.
“The set-up is complete and we’re ready to welcome you. Come join us as we celebrate and countdown to 2025 together,” Amutenya added.
