A POLICE officer shot and killed himself with a service pistol at Onamagongani village on Saturday, and a security guard also committed suicide by using a gun he booked out for duty in Windhoek on Friday.

Sergeant Andreas Petrus (53) shot himself at that village in the Epembe constituency of the Ohangwena region.

A police report issued yesterday said Petrus used the service pistol he had been issued with during his deployment to one of the polling stations during the presidential and National Assembly elections on Wednesday. He did not return the weapon to the station after completing his electoral duties, and his body was discovered by officers who went to look for him. His next of kin were informed.

In the second incident, Andimba Moses (34), a security guard employed by Namibia Protection Services, shot himself with the company service shotgun while on duty on Friday night at the Lafrenz Industrial Area in Windhoek. His next of kin have been informed of his death, and police investigations continue.

Meanwhile, pensioner Peter Ian Petherbridge (65) also shot himself in the head with a revolver on Saturday afternoon in Ludwigsdorf, Windhoek. The motive is not known, there was no suicide note left behind, and police investigations continue.

Shikwambi added that a 25-year-old male was arrested on Saturday afternoon in Vergenoeg location, Ariamsvlei, after three parcels of cannabis were discovered in his room.
