Police warn farmers to keep livestock off public roads

THE Otjiwarongo police yesterday vowed to punish farmers who leave their livestock roaming along public roads.

The police were reacting to an accident involving a 39-year-old man on the B1 road between Otavi and Otjiwarongo on Monday night.

Ambrosius Hinaunye was driving to Otjiwarongo when he hit a cow that was standing in the middle of the road, some 14 kilometres outside the town.

The vehicle left the road, and came to a standstill after 200 metres.

Hinaunye escaped the accident unhurt.

He told Nampa shortly afterwards that he only saw the cow when it was a very short distance away.

“Something needs to be done about the stray cattle on this road,” he lamented.

On her part, Otjozondjupa regional police spokesperson, warrant officer Maureen Mbeha said her office will deal with farmers who allow their livestock to roam along public roads without a herder.

She added that the owner of the cow will be identified by means of the cow’;s ear tag.

“We will issue a fine of N$1 000 for leaving the livestock without a cattle herder,” Mbeha stressed.

The police officer then called on all farmers in the region to keep their livestock in fenced areas.
