Policeman accused of killing pedestrians

A WINDHOEK Policeman allegedly caused the deaths of two pedestrians on the Western Bypass on Monday.

Warrant Officer Holly Kavetu (29) was charged with two counts of culpable homicide as well as drunken driving, after Police who arrived on the scene allegedly found his blood-alcohol level to be above the legal limit.The identities of the two adult men killed in the accident cannot be revealed yet, Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Stephan Nuuyi said yesterday, as the Police were still waiting for family members to identify the bodies at the Windhoek mortuary.Kavetu made his first court appearance on Tuesday, and was granted bail of N$2 000.He is set to return to court on July 31.Kavetu was driving a white double-cab bakkie.Nuuyi said Kavetu’s blood-alcohol level was about 0.6 mg of alcohol per 1 000 ml of breath.The legal limit in Namibia is 0.37 mg of alcohol per 1 000 ml of breath. A Police source said Kavetu will also face an internal investigation by the Police’s Complaints and Discipline Unit.
