A NATIONAL Council member from the Hardap region, Simon Dukeleni, was acquitted of rape in the Mariental Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Dukeleni was charged with raping his ex-girlfriend at her residence at Mariental’s Aimablaagte in May last year.
The woman had claimed that the politician raped her after she had ended their relationship over his dishonesty.
He had pleaded not guilty to the rape charge.
In acquitting him, magistrate Verinao Kamahene said a state witness and the complainant’s accounts had been weak and contradictory.
Following his acquittal, Dukeleni said he would be seeking legal advice on whether to sue his rape accuser for causing him emotional damage, and defaming him. “I will not only sue the complainant, but equally the state after soliciting popular strength of the case (sic),” he stated.
