Swanu faction leader Evilastus Kaaronda must be extremely desperate if he declares that Namibia’s Constitution must be torn up to introduce the death penalty.
Kaaronda says the absence of the death penalty is why heinous crimes like murder are prevalent.
Sadly, during elections politicians latch onto populist promises that are blatantly false in the hope of getting votes.
We trust Namibians are not gullible enough to believe the death penalty would solve crime, which, for time immemorial, has been largely proven across different parts of the world to be linked to poverty.
Kaaronda dishonestly avoids highlighting that the abolishment of the death penalty as stated in the Constitution was driven by South West Africa National Union leader Vekuii Rukoro.
It was unanimously accepted by the elected leaders who approved independent Namibia’s Constitution, because they knew how it was misused by the apartheid regime, and to establish a new culture of respect for life.
Populist politicians like Kaaronda and several others who want to take us back to colonial and apartheid times have no place in a country that yearns for practical solutions to our intractable challenges.
