President Nangolo Mbumba has urged global leaders to choose a path of peace, prosperity and sustainable development for all.
Mbumba made this call at the United Nations’ Summit of the Future in New York on Sunday.
He said the world is currently at a crossroads, with one path leading to an environmental catastrophe, widening inequalities, global conflict and destruction, and the rise of dangerous technologies that threaten world security and civil liberties.
“The other path offers hope for climate change, global peace, the eradication of poverty and hunger, and the responsible harnessing of digital technologies for the benefit of all humanity. Therefore, the Summit of the Future is a timely and urgent call to action, urging us to choose the path of peace, prosperity and sustainable development for all,” Mbumba said.
Mbumba added that the world of 1945, when the United Nations was established to promote peace and unity among nations, is contrastingly different from the world of 2024.
“So much has changed! As a result, we as leaders are once again called upon by destiny to come together and forge a brighter future for our peoples,” Mbumba said.
He added: “To forge a brighter tomorrow for people and the planet, we must be courageous to reform international organisations, including the United Nations and its Security Council.”
Mbumba said a new and effective multilateralism requires four key reforms at the UN, which must include empowering nations for sustainable economic growth, strengthening global agreements for sustainable development goals, establishing innovative financial mechanisms and leveraging advancements in science and technology, while safeguarding against their misuse.
The summit is ending on Monday.
