THE quality of performance at The Namibian Newspaper Cup is expected to elevate after PstBet announced a three-year bumper N$2,9 million nationwide sponsorship of the Governor’s Cup competitions.
The regions use the Governor’s Cup to select their teams to battle for the Newspaper Cup, the pre-eminent youth sport tournament in the country.
Each of the 14 regions will receive N$210 000 from PstBet over three years or N$70 000 per annum.
Therefore, PstBet will invest N$2 940 000 over three years.
Announcing the sponsorship, PstBet chief executive officer Steve Hamunyela said the company is committed to help develop sport in the country as well as to grow the PstBet brand.
Hamunyela said he hopes, through the sponsorship, the regions would continue to create opportunities for hosting competitive events for the youth.
“It is our hope that this investment will give the office of the governors an opportunity to make their events even more exciting and hopefully raise the stakes so that the people of your regions look forward to these events’ year in and year out,” Hamunyela said.
“We are also aware that most of the Governor’s Cups already have existing sponsors. We want to partner with all of them to make these events even bigger and better and share these uplifting platforms in the interest of our youth,” Hamunyela said.
Khomas governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua expressed gratitude towards PstBet when she received the sponsorship on behalf of all the recipients.
“I am confident that your sponsorship is a boost and will add special value and make a difference to our ongoing sport and youth development endeavours,” she said.
“This is inspiration which will give us a good footing and will be the solid foundation upon which we will build this Governor’s Cup competition for now and generations to come,” McLeod-Katjirua added.
“We are commend your decision to join us in offering the young people an avenue to constructively participate in sport through the Governor’s Cup. The access to sport and recreational activity has long been recognised by the United Nations, as a fundamental human right.”
