Pupil in critical condition after water tank accident

THREE pupils at Gabriel Muhuli Combined School were admitted to Rundu Intermediate Hospital after a water tank fell on them at Mazana village in the Kavango East region on Tuesday.

The regional police’s crime investigations coordinator, Bonifasius Kanyetu, confirmed the incident saying the children were standing under the water tank stand before it fell.

“They were all rushed to Rundu state hospital,” Kanyetu said.

Kanyetu said a Grade 2 pupil, Stephanus Kandara (8), is in critical condition having sustained three fractures on his left leg and both hips, and with water in his lungs.

The other two pupils, both in Grade 3, are said to be in stable condition: Josephine Ngangura (8) sustained a fracture on her left leg and has water in her lungs, while Helena Muronga (8) also has water in her lungs.

Kanyetu confirmed that the children continue to receive medical attention in the hospital.

The acting regional director for education and Sambyu circuit education inspector, Blasius Haita, said the Directorate of Education was notified of an incident in which two water tanks collapsed.

“After I learned about the incident, I later visited the learners in the hospital with the school management, including the principal,” Haita noted

Haita added that a technical team will be deployed to the school to determine the cause of the incident.
