Pupkewitz Gala turns 50

THE Pupkewitz Development Schools Gala reaches a special milestone this weekend when it will be held for the 50th successive year.

The gala will be held at three venues simultaneously – at the Western Suburbs Pool in Katutura, at the Oranjemund Private School in Oranjemund, and at the Cube Swimming Pool in Swakopmund.

The gala, which starts on Friday afternoon and continues on Saturday morning, will see a record number of entries, with 811 swimmers competing in Windhoek, 140 in Oranjemund and 100 in Swakopmund.

There will also be a development water polo match on Saturday afternoon in Windhoek between DHPS and St Paul’s College.

“We are unbelievably grateful to the Pupkewitz family who have been supporting this initiative for 50 years,” the Namibia Swimming Union said in a press release.

“Their unwavering support and belief in the positive impact that swimming can have in a person’s life means that we can continue to facilitate this development gala and by doing so expand our reach and the number of individuals that access water safely,” it added.

The official opening will be held in Windhoek at 08h00 on Saturday, with Meryl Barry of the Pupkewitz Foundation and Nasu president Aileen Botha due to give speeches.
