The Namibian Police and the Namibia Revenue Agency (Namra) intercepted a South African truck driver allegedly transporting cannabis worth N$6 million at Windhoek’s Northern Industrial Area on Wednesday.
This came after an intelligence-led operation in Windhoek.
A search was conducted, and cannabis weighing 120,6 kilograms and worth N$6 million was found in the driver’s truck.
This is according to a statement issued by police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi and Namra spokesperson Yarukeekuro Ndorokaze yesterday.
According to the statement, three suspects – Zimbabwean nationals aged 54, 45 and 34 – were arrested in connection with the incident.
They were expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
“Following another intelligence-led operation, the officials also stopped a truck driver between the Ariamsvlei and Nakop borders, close to the Ariamsvlei Border Post, Thursday morning at around 00h15,” the statement also said.
During the search, 100,4kg of cannabis worth N$500 000 was found, the police and Namra stated.
A 55-year-old South African man was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in the Karasburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
“In order to protect society, the police and Namra are still dedicated to stopping the illegal importation and distribution of controlled substances,” says the statement.
According to the statement, these initiatives highlight how important it is for the two institutions to safeguard society from the negative impacts of drugs.
“In order to support our efforts, we kindly ask the people to continue their vigilance, report any suspicious activity to law enforcement and abide by the laws put in place to protect the safety of our country,” the statement reads.
