Founding president Sam Nujoma’s memorial service was temporarily suspended due to heavy rain at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek on Friday.
The showers abruptly cut short former president Hifikepunye Pohamba’s speech. Director of ceremonies and minister of defence and veteran affairs Frans Kapofi thanked mourners in the crowd for keeping their spirits high.
As an interim measure, Kapofi requested that the programme move more quickly in case of further showers.
“We will need to move faster with the program as the bigger rain is coming,” he said.
Zimbabwean president Emmerson Mnangagwa, former president of the Democratic Republic of Congo Joseph Kabila and other foreign dignitaries are also in attendance.
