South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has announced his new cabinet for the government of national unity (GNU), retaining much of the old guard from his African National Congress.
In a speech on Sunday night, Ramaphosa said Paul Mashatile will remain as his vice president, while official opposition leader John Steenhuisen from the Demoratic Alliance (DA) has been given the position of minister of agriculture.
“The ministry of agriculture will be separated from the ministry of land reform and rural development,” said Ramaphosa.
He appointed Mzwanele Nyhontso, president of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), to lead the ministry of land reform and rural development.
The minister of finance is Enoch Godongwana (ANC), who will be deputised by David Masondo (ANC) and Ashor Sarupen (DA).
Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie, who has been demanding the home affairs portfolio, has been made minister of sport, arts and culture.
The minister of home affairs will be Leon Schreiber, of the DA.
The minister of electricity and energy is Kgosientsho Ramokgopa (ANC), who will have to deal with the country’s crippling blackouts.
The deputy minister of electricity and energy is Samantha Graham (DA).
ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe will continue in his position as minister of mineral resources.
