Rape accused hospitalised

Katima Mulilo Hospital

The Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court has granted the retired Zambezi regional education director (74), who is accused of raping and impregnating a minor, permission to be transferred from custody to a local hospital.

Innocent Mahoto was arrested last week after allegedly raping and impregnating a 16-year-old Zambian pupil.

Mahato allegedly raped the pupil between December 2022 and March 2023.

He appeared before magistrate Davy Kambinda last Friday and was remanded in custody.

Kambinda granted Mahato’s urgent bail application, which was to be heard on Tuesday.

Mahoto’s legal representative, Bernhard Tjatjara, informed the court that his client was not given food the whole day, which affected the medical conditions he suffers from.

Additionally, Tjatjara said his client’s police holding cell is leaking, which exacerbates his medical conditions.

He requested that the court allow his client to see a private medical doctor.

Kambinda ordered that Mahoto be admitted to hospital for observation while remaining in police custody until his next court appearance.

His bail application was postponed to 15 June.

Cedric Mundia prosecuted for the state.
