Reckless driving claims two lives, injures five

A series of six reckless driving incidents over the weekend resulted in two fatalities and left five others injured.

This is according to a police weekend crime report released on Sunday.

In one incident on Friday at around 07h00 at Mahenzere village along the road between Rundu and Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West region, it is alleged that a 63-year-old ran over a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

The pedestrian died on the spot.

According to police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the deceased was identified as Kahoha Sebedeus (24).

Shikwambi said Sebedeus’ next of kin were informed.

In another incident on Friday at around 21h30 at Outapi in the Omusati region, it is alleged that a suspect drove a sedan in a reckless manner and ran over two pedestrians.

Shikwambi said the suspect also failed to render assistance to the injured people, one of whom died later at a hospital.

“The deceased was identified as Klaudius Rosalia. It is further alleged that the suspect also bumped another vehicle, a white double cab. The deceased’s next of kin were informed,” she said.

On the same day, at about 17h40 near the Akuna location along the main road between Ondangwa and Oshakati, it is alleged that a 22-year-old male fell from a moving truck and sustained head injuries.

Shikwambi said the victim was rushed to an Onandjokwe hospital and is in a stable condition.

“It is alleged that the victim was sitting at the back of a truck. No arrest has been made yet,” she added.

In a separate incident at Ondangwa on Friday at about 21h20 along Ondangwa main road, it is alleged that a 34-year-old female bumped a motorbike driving in the same direction.

“The driver of the motorbike (36) sustained minor right leg and head injuries. He was rushed to an Onandjokwe hospital in a stable condition,”.

Another incident on Sunday at around 00h20 at the Opoto location near Ongwediva, a 31-year-old man, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, ran over a pedestrian (41) who was crossing the road.

The pedestrian sustained a broken right arm and head injury.

Police investigations continue.
