Rehoboth CEO suspended

REHOBOTH chief executive officer Christoph /Uirab has been served with a “precautionary suspension” of three months for interfering in an investigation targeting him.

The suspension came to light in a letter submitted by the town council to urban development minister Sophia Shaningwa on Monday.

The letter also states that /Uirab’s suspension was to prevent the town from “sliding further down the abyss of poor service delivery”.

The town council claimed there was evidence that /Uirab had threatened officials with disciplinary action if they cooperated in the investigation against him.

The council noted that the opposition was running the town through the CEO’s office, while Swapo councillors were being blamed for poor service delivery.

The council also charged that /Uirab had become a “public activist”, who attacked councillors in the media and on social media platforms. /Uirab is also accused of deliberately delaying council meetings, knowing there were consequences for such delays. Amongst charges levelled against /Uirab by the town council is his failure to table a budget for council approval.

Council also charged that /Uirab has refused to execute council resolutions, spends money without authorisation, and has failed to account for N$3,2 million, which had been earmarked for upgrading pump stations at the town.

Similarly, his alleged failure to implement the town’s strategic plan, has also troubled the council.

“Also, the town’s electricity bill has skyrocketed from N$19 million in February to N$43 million in September, and the CEO blames everybody except himself,” the letter states. Attempts to get comment from /Uirab yesterday proved unsuccessful as he was unreachable on his cellphone.
