Ruben and Ambunda joint Sports Achiever of the Year

WINDHOEK – Special Olympics athlete Ruben Gowaseb and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) super bantamweight champion Paulus “The Rock” Ambunda were named joint Sports Achiever of the Year on Friday.

Ambunda was also named Sportsman of the Year.

The Namibian Sports Commission (NSC) hosted its annual sports awards ceremony here on Friday to honour the country’s sports personalities for their achievements throughout the year.

Gowaseb earlier this year won Namibia’s only gold at the Special Olympics Games in the United States of America. On Friday he also beat Ananias Shikongo, Ruben Soroseb and Johannes Ipuleni to be named Disability Sportsman of the Year.

Ambunda beat Bernard Scholtz, Wangu Batista Gome, Jean-Paul Burger and Jacques Burger to win the Sportsman of the Year award.

The boxer and Gowaseb will share the N$200 000 cash prize as joint Sports Achiever of the Year, while while in the best sportsman category each walked away with N$100 000.

Equestrian Michelle Kunzle was crowned the Sportswoman of the Year, while Johanna Benson was named Disabled Sportswoman of the Year.

Both awards came with cash prizes of N$100 000.

Coach – Nestor Tobias (boxing)

Sports Team – Senior national football team
