SA champions are Namibia’s 4×4 Vasbyt winners

SOUTH Africa’s 4×4 obstacle course champions, Izak Maritz and co-driver Johan Bekker, won the Swakop Valley 4×4 Vasbyt Competition held on December 27.

Not only did they win the competition, but also the admiration of nearly 10 000 spectators who sat on the Swakop River’s banks to watch their skills in handling their Toyota Turbo over ten tough obstacle courses – up and down rocks and dunes, and through tyre and mud pits.
The mud pit was the biggest challenge at this year’s event – not a single participant was able to drive through it.
It was only the ‘Tiny’ monster truck that managed to beat the mud pit to the spectators’ delight – but this radical vehicle too got stuck during a second attempt.
Kooitjie Smit of the Namib Desert 4×4 Club, who organised this year’s event, said the final Vasbyt event of the year was a huge success. About 20 teams participated, with six from South Africa.
