SADC transport authority moves to Botswana

THE Southern African Development Community (SADC) yesterday announced the relocation of its Southern African Transport and Communications Commission (SATCC) from Mozambique to Gaborone, Botswana.

The SATCC was based in Mozambique for 23 years during which time it co-ordinated transportation and communications programmes to develop a regional infrastructure through harmonised policies, legislation and regulatory frameworks in all participating member states. Prega Ramsamy, executive secretary of SADC, outlined the achievements of the commission as including the mobilisation of resources for the development of regional infrastructure resulting in a good network of tarred roads, railways and air-links throughout the region. In particular the development corridors along established transportation routes where highlighted by Ramsamy as he pick out the Dar es Salaam Corridor, the Maputo Corridor and the Walvis Bay Corridor as significant success stories. He called the corridors an innovative approach towards regional development taking into account other sector’ development activities along the transport corridors such as agriculture, mining, tourism and commerce.”Transportation services therefore, play a catalyst role to the other sectors and sets impetus for supplementary investment in these sectors exploiting their locational advantages in relation to the transport corridor,” Ramsamy said. All transport and communication programmes previously under the commission are now integrated into SADC’s Directorate on Infrastructure and Services.Prega Ramsamy, executive secretary of SADC, outlined the achievements of the commission as including the mobilisation of resources for the development of regional infrastructure resulting in a good network of tarred roads, railways and air-links throughout the region. All transport and communication programmes previously under the commission are now integrated into SADC’s Directorate on Infrastructure and Services.
