YOU’VE seen them at Song Night, you’ve heard them at Night Under the Stars and soon, if you’re in Norway in June, you can watch them perform at the Bergen Afro Arts Festival (BAAF) – an annual afrocentric event that promotes the development and preservation of Africa’s finest traditions and values.
Seemingly bursting out of nowhere, Savannah Afros, namely Slick Neusu, Tapz Munya, Takunda Stunt, Titus and Nyasha Chirau, have quickly earned roars of applause at Namibia’s jubilee celebrations in between tirelessly working the Boiler Room, Jojo’s and Goethe-Zentrum circuit.
Lucky for them, hard work pays off and the young outfit was recently scouted by BAAF who will be facilitating their Norway performances, while funding a significant portion of their travel and living costs during the festival.
Earning local fame for their self-penned, realistic and heartfelt songs, Savannah Afros deftly combines Neusu and Munya’s vocals with the sound of drums, mbira, keyboard and guitar to create an African aesthetic that can be as elegiac as it is enthusing.
Telling stories of their own trials and life lessons, Savannah Afros have swiftly ensnared local hearts in between peddling their fun fusion of afro jazz, soul, pop and traditional music internationally. The effect is a sound that transcends race and gender while still hitting notes of afro urban contemporary.
Certainly African music for Africans but with enough dynamism to appeal to the global village, Savannah Afros seem well on their way while expanding their international fan base with the African flag held high.
“We believe our music is inspired by the daily lives of African people so going to Norway is all about sharing our African stories and life experiences through music,” says Savannah Afros’ manager and owner of artist management company, Duchess Distinctive, Ashante Manetti.
“The message of pain, struggle, love and heartache is universal.”
Undoubtedly universal, Savannah Afros’ message of love is one that can be heard at a yet to be announced concert in Windhoek in May.
Watch their space to see a band out of nowhere boldly go everywhere.
