It’s that time, time for children to load up their backpacks, don their uniforms and head back to school. It can be a hard transition going from the freedom of holidays to the structure of being a full-time pupil, but you know what? It’s worth it.
There’s nothing like getting a good old education, it gives you a foundation for the rest of your life.
In celebration of school and education, we’ve put together ideas for you to take into consideration when making your way back to school.
You’ve probably stood in line at Checkers enough this past week to know that you need basic stationary to kick-start the year, so basic school supplies– check! School uniform – check!
Now we give you a list of goals to inspire and encourage you to better yourself and your attitude towards your school career.
First have an open mind. A new school year means a fresh start. Don’t be afraid to be friendly to people you used to ignore, or join a new club on a whim. It’s your school year make the most of it.
Set high goals
Setting goals for yourself will help make you accountable for your own success. Strive to be in the top five of your class.
Study
Studying is a no brainer. Earning good grades takes time and effort, but your high school results need to showcase solid grades. If you struggle with a subject, ask for help and be sure to turn in all your assignments on time.
Ask questions
A lot of high school learners are satisfied sitting in the back of the class with their heads down. However, learners that ask questions and engage themselves in the lesson often retain more. Get in the habit of asking questions in class and continue asking questions throughout the year.
Whatever you do read, read, and read
Reading outside of your high school obligations will help build your vocabulary and further prepare you for when you go to university. Broadening your vocabulary may also help you earn higher scores in all subjects.
Learn time management
Do your homework early to avoid a pile up of work. And do not forget to ask for clarification way in advance.
Participate in extracurricular activities
Extracurricular activities are important for several reasons. Firstly, in extra activities you have the opportunity to learn about music, arts, and sports. You will also learn how to work and communicate with peers and mentors. Extracurricular activities also look great on your CV.
Be disciplined
Respect your teachers and your fellow learners. Do not give your teachers a hard time by failing to follow instructions. Build a good relationship with them so that you feel comfortable when approaching them for help in areas you do not understand.
Do not vandalise school property
Respect and take care of your school property. Be proud to be associated with your respective school. Report any act of vandalism to your school head.
Relax
Planning for university takes a lot of work and should be taken seriously. Yet it is important to have fun and spend time with your friends. Your high school days will be over in a couple of years and before you know it, you’ll be setting your sights on your university career. Enjoy your high school years while you can, and work hard for a successful future.
“Let 2014 be a year of hard work and success, put more extra effort in your school work, it will surely pay off by the end of the year,” says Lenie Indongo, a teacher at Highline Secondary School in Katutura. “Learners should always seek additional information to make their work
interesting.”
