The search for the Small Stock Producer of the Year 2023 is on and the Livestock Producers Organisation (LPO) is inviting members of the Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) to register for the competition.
According to the latest issue of the NAU newsletter, entries for the competition close on 28 July.
The LPO is an affiliate of the NAU.
The NAU says a team of judges will visit the candidates’ establishments during July/August to assess the entries.
“The judging team consists of impartial experts in specific agricultural areas who will use an objective scientific method to identify the winner based on predetermined international management criteria,” said the NAU in the newsletter.
The winner will be announced during the LPO’s annual steak braai in Windhoek on 3 October.
The requirements for the competition are that the candidate farms on his/her own or in partnership with others. In the latter case, however, the candidate must deal with specifically assigned responsibilities on which he/she can be evaluated.
Candidates may only enter the competition as individuals. Brothers/family may not enter jointly, but may compete against each other by participating as individuals.
“Each candidate must already have been a paid-up member of the NAU for at least one year on 31 December 2022,” said the NAU, adding that the three finalists must be prepared to travel to Windhoek for the announcement of the winner on the evening of 3 October.
The newsletter also said the winner of the award must be prepared to host a farmers’ day in 2024.
Interested farmers are required to complete an entry form and send it to their farmers’ association (FA) or regional agricultural union (RAU).
“The chairman of the FA, the RAU or an independent person acting as reference must complete a testimonial about the candidate’s farming situation, as well as his/her involvement in the community,” said the newsletter, adding that the FA/RAU must submit the entry form and testimonial to the LPO office.
