Security guard shoots, injures attacker at Grootfontein

A security guard (29) reportedly shot and injured an alleged attacker at Grootfontein on Saturday.

Otjozondjupa crime investigations coordinator deputy commissioner Edna Nawa says the alleged shooting occurred at about 01h00 on Saturday morning at a nightclub at the town’s Omulunga settlement.

“It is alleged that a group of men first attacked the security guard, who was on duty, and that during the scuffle the guard pulled out a gun and shot one of the suspected attackers in the stomach,” Nawa says.

The victim (29) sustained serious injuries and was taken to Grootfontein State Hospital, where he is reportedly in a critical condition, Nawa says.

She says the security guard was also admitted to the hospital under police guard.

HIT-AND-RUN

Also over the weekend, a man (43) died in a hit-and-run incident on the B8 road a few kilometres north of Otavi.

Nawa says the pedestrian was hit and injured by an unknown vehicle.

“At about 01h30 a passer-by found him lying on the road with his legs broken,” she says.

The police were alerted, who then called an ambulance, which transported the victim to Otavi Clinic, where he died at about 04h15.

Police investigations into both matters continue.
