Serena cuts back on the bling

Serena cuts back on the bling

MELBOURNE – Serena Williams might have won US$21 million in prize money but she’s using a 12 dollar bag at the Australian Open, and is foregoing her famous shopping sprees to stay in and watch TV instead.

The American nine-time Grand Slam winner, known for her eye-catching fashion statements, said there would be less ‘bling’ this year as the financial crisis bites, although a new dress with ‘daring patterns’ was on the cards.
‘The bag I’m carrying now is from American Apparel. It’s only, like, 12 dollars,’ said Williams, known for her extravagant spending.
‘I really cut back, you know. I don’t know if it’s because it’s everywhere in the media, the financial crisis, but it’s low tide for me. I’m not out there buying crazy things.
‘I’ve always been kind of been conservative, but we’ll see. It’s never going to be too much toned down, but I’m not going out there just throwing my dollar bills everywhere.’
Rather than hitting the shops, Williams will be sticking to her hotel room watching TV, confessing that she’s a ‘Desperate Housewives’ fanatic.
‘I love to watch TV,’ she said. ‘I’ve gotten into iTunes. And I’m terrible for the movie and music industry because I download movies and music and TV shows.
‘I’m obsessed with ‘Desperate Housewives’, so I’m waiting for Monday so I can download the next episode.
‘That’s kind of what I do. I just watch TV on my computer. It relaxes me. My mom is here, a friend’s here. Last year I went to the movies, but I’m not going to do that this year because I lost. So I’m just going to stay in my room.’ – Nampa-AFP
