Shishani returns home to recharge and create

Shishani

Following a year’s hiatus, Belgium-Namibian jazz singer Shishani Vranckx has announced her return to the country, aiming to get inspiration for new work.

She is is set to perform at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) on Friday.

Shishani says the crowd can look forward to an intimate evening with a blend of songs and musical styles, personal storytelling and togetherness.

“I will perform with my longtime musical team: bassist Afron Nyambali and Tapz on percussion and vocals. I’ll share songs from my new album, ‘Whispers’, which will be available on CD and vinyl at the show. I’ll also play the older songs people know and relate to, like ‘Minority’ and ‘Raining Words’,” she says.

Shishani says she arrived in the country about two weeks ago and is exploring northern Namibia.

“So far I have spent most of my time travelling through beautiful landscapes and specifically connecting to my roots in northern Namibia. It’s been a profound journey that will definitely reflect in my new work,” she says.

Shishani says apart from catching up with family, friends and supporters, she likes to visit Namibia to do research, reconnect and create.

There is no place like home, she says.

“The first thing I always do being back home is to go have food at my mom’s place. The rest comes after.

“So far I’ve been able to see family, friends, colleagues and spend time in nature. Coming home keeps me grounded and inspired.

“I recharge when I’m here and take my inspiration to new creations. It’s important to stay connected to my family, my people, my friends. It’s such a big part of who I am and how I create.
