Similo is new head of NBC

POWERCOM chief executive officer Stanley Similo has been appointed as the director general of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation.

This was announced by information and communication technology minister Tjekero Tweya at parliament yesterday.

It is not clear when Similo will resume duty as his appointment still needs Cabinet approval.

Similo will take over from Albertus Aochamub, who has been appointed as press secretary of State House. NBC’s chief human resources officer Vezenga Kauraisa has been acting as director general since the departure of Aochamub, who had been at the helm of NBC since 1 August 2010.

Aochamub forms part of Geingob’s recently announced team of advisers to join State House.

Similo yesterday said he is aware of the daunting task that awaits him and will have to live up to the nation’s expectations.

He stated that although radio covers some areas substantively, he will have to make sure Namibians in all corners of the country get access to television viewing.

“I appreciate the efforts made by those before me which brought us to where we are today,” Similo said, adding that he must now infuse new ideas and is looking forward to hitting the ground running.

He noted that the bar has been set very high by his predecessor, and will pick up from where he left off.

Similo has previous experience at senior management level at NBC, the Road Fund Administration (RFA) as a cooperate affairs manager, Skorpion Zinc and FNB Holding Limited.
