ARYAN Jit Singh of Great Britain and Carle Botha of South Africa won boys and girls’ singles titles at the International Tennis Federation J30 u-18 tournament in Windhoek on Saturday.
The top-seeded Singh was pushed all the way by the unseeded Victor Tauson, who went on a great run to the final after having to qualify for the tournament.
Tausen won the first set 6-3, but Singh moved up a gear to take the second set 6-1. The final set was tightly contested till the end, with Singh winning the tie-breaker 7-6 (6-2).
In the semi-finals, Singh beat the unseeded Constantin Neubauer of Austria 6-3, 7-6, while Tauson beat another unseeded Swede, Lukas Andersson 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.
The men’s doubles title was won by the fourth seeds, Adrien De Rosiere of Switzerland and Mateya Stanislavljevic, who beat the unseeded Jan Dabrowski of Poland and Daniel Krige of South Africa 6-3, 6-4 in the final.
The girls final was a close encounter between the top seed, Eline Bex of Belgium, and the second seed, South Africa’s Botha.
Bex won the first set 7-5, but Botha fought back to take the second 6-3.
The South African prevailed to win the third set 6-4, to take the match 2-1.
In the semi-finals, Bex beat the third seeded Tadiwanashe Mauchi of Zimbabwe 6-2, 6-2, while Botha beat the unseeded Lena Rajca from Poland, who retired after losing the first set 6-1.
Bex, however, won the doubles title with her team mate Axelle Van Beurden after beating Veena Nazar of Gemany and Anna Payer of Austria 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 in the final.
