SOS Children’s Village raised over N$340 000 at a recent fundraising gala dinner in Windhoek.
This was confirmed by the children’s village on Wednesday.
The event was held on 26 October, under the theme, ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child’.
Speaking at the event, deputy minister of gender equality, poverty eradication and social welfare Bernadette Jagger thanked those who contributed.
“Our goal was to raise N$300 000. Your contributions have a direct and lasting impact, giving each child the chance to become a champion of their own life and a productive member of society,” Jagger said.
She noted that since its inception in 1984 in Windhoek, followed by the villages at Tsumeb in 1997 and Ondangwa in 2009, SOS Children’s Villages in Namibia has been a beacon of hope.
According to the deputy minister, the villages have not only provided homes but also love, care and opportunities for children to grow into empowered, self-reliant adults.
Christmas Mutota (6) highlighted that one in 10 children and young people are separated from their families.
He said all in society are responsible for ensuring Namibian children are well taken care of.
He urged broader society to support Namibian children by providing quality education and caring for those who cannot live with their own families.
“This act of kindness can really change children’s lives. Our children are the future leaders, teachers and doctors, etc. My generation will only progress when well directed. My generation will lead you when well taken care of, so support us now and we will take good care of you,” Mutota added.
