‘Squares in Nature – Nature in Squares’

IN THE ever-modernising world we live in, it is easy to forget that once upon a time humanity had to work closely with nature.

With plastic and synthetics taking over how we create things, we’ve mostly lost the skill to naturally extract dyes from plants or how to weave our own fibres, apart from skillful artisans.

‘Squares in Nature – Nature in Squares’ is an exhibition by Nina Lawrin, a Fullbright grant recipient from Chicago, Illinois, which explores the way in which we both take and give back to nature and find the balance between the two.

Coming from a painting background, Lawrin dove into weaving after becoming ill from the harsh chemicals in the paints she would use in her work, which made her question the types of materials she used.

From her background knowledge of painting and understanding the history of canvasses, she started making her own and then dove into weaving.

Owing some influence and inspiration for her work to the Kalahari Wild Silk Weavers, Lawrin has been able to be in touch with them as well as getting the opportunity to weave with the Ibenstein Weavers at Dordabis. Part of her time here has been a chance to exchange and learn with Namibian artisans and people.

In addition to the exhibition that will be on display at the Project Room from 25 November to 9 December, Lawrin will be hosting a natural dye workshop on 26 November at the Project Room from 10h00 to 15h00.

The workshop looks at plants from the Kalahari and Caprivi strip which can be used for natural dyes as well as a list of everyday food products like avocado and pomegranates that can be used to extract dyes.

Where some might see some species of plants as ‘invader species’, Lawrin sees them as an opportunity to use them as fibres or dyes, which can perhaps encourage us all to make better use of our environment and reconsider what we deem to be ‘waste’.

“I think being engaged in the world in a tactile way slows down the body and mind. There’s a fulfilling sense of connection. Feeling and slowing down to notice the smells and the visceral experience brings appreciation and a deeper connection to nature. We are all part of nature and connecting with her is connecting to ourselves at the most human level. I also think it’s important to fall in love with nature, to be amazed and curious. I think then with this deep respect, we are able to create a mutually beneficial relationship,” explains Lawrin.

‘Squares in Nature – Nature in Squares’ will be at The Project Room on 25 November to 9 December. The Project Room is situated at 32 Jenner Street, Windhoek West. It will show on Tuesdays to Fridays from 09h00 to 13h00 and Saturdays from 10h00 to 13h00.
