Standard Bank Namibia recently handed over awards to the top performing pupils in last year’s Grade 10 and 12 examinations. Recognising their excellence performance, Standard Bank Namibia awarded cash prizes worth a total of N$280 000 to 84 pupils and 28 schools countrywide.
The award ceremony, which took place on the 29 January, formed part of Standard Bank’s ‘Investing in Academic Excellence’ initiative.
Supporting the Ministry of Education, the bank handed over cash prizes to top performers in each region. The schools in the respective regions with the highest number of top academic performances also received cash prizes.
To Standard Bank, the importance of education cannot be over-emphasised. Education provides people with the ability to make choices and to enjoy a better life and is thus a vehicle for poverty alleviation, human development and social advancement.
“Standard Bank has ploughed back a total of N$1.4 million into this initiative over a period of five years,” said Sigrid Tjijorokisa, group company secretary and head: corporate social investment.
Tjijorokisa singled out two pupils for their hard work, determination and achieving success despite their circumstances – Calvin Thompson and Tulipamwe Omwene Petrus.
“Calvin and Tulipamwe’s stories show how a supportive environment created by parents and teachers can positively impact pupils’ academic performance. What all pupils seem to have in common is a vision for their future. One of the key lessons is to never let personal circumstances or your surroundings distract you from optimising your full potential,” said Tjijorokisa.
