State withdraws charges against MP Hengari

Inna Hengari

Charges on which Popular Democratic Movement National Assembly member Inna Hengari was arrested in Windhoek on 21 March were withdrawn in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura on Friday.

Public prosecutor Tatelo Lusepani informed magistrate Linus Samunzala the state was withdrawing charges against Hengari when she appeared in court with two co-accused, social activists Dimbulukeni Nauyoma and Michael Amushelelo.

Hengari, Nauyoma and Amushelelo were charged with counts of public violence, malicious damage to property and incitement to public violence in connection with their alleged participation in a planned public demonstration about unemployment in Namibia on 21 March.
The police prohibited the demonstration from going ahead.

After being arrested, Hengari was held in custody for three days before she was granted bail in an amount of N$5 000.

Nauyoma has also been released on bail of N$5 000.

Amushelelo is still being held in custody, after an application by him to be granted bail was turned down by a magistrate in April and an appeal against that ruling was dismissed in the High Court on 14 August.
