Struggle Credentials ‘Worn Out’

Struggle Credentials ‘Worn Out’

IT has become patently obvious to any rational, intelligent, logical person that Robert Mugabe’s megalomania has reached a point of no return.

Arrogance offers no apology under any circumstances! Robert Mugabe, his cabinet, and its ministers have lost sight of exactly who they are. They are merely individuals entrusted by the people to run the country. In Zimbabwe they have run the country into the ground. They are servants, not masters! One would be hard pressed to believe that, going by their behaviour and the perks that they enjoy! The Mugabe loyalists in Namibia have the convenience of offering their solidarity with the Zimbabwean power structure free of the horrendous conditions under which ordinary Zimbabweans have to survive.Their solidarity is not with ordinary Zimbabweans, but with Mugabe, and the latter has morphed from a latter-day tyrant into an ordinary criminal! His Struggle credentials no longer do the trick.Cries of imperialism and colonialism are worn-out slogans that have withered long after their sell-by dates.Even Zanu-PF dissents do not have the courage to speak up for their compatriots for fear of being clubbed senseless as they too try to design exit strategies.Mugabe’s senility overrides his astuteness as a politician. But what is most distressing is the fact that Zimbabwe’s neighbours have stood by and allowed him free rein as he takes the country into its downward spiral of destruction. The role of certain members of the international community, in the worsening situation, should not be ignored. They were, after all, co-signatories to the Lancaster house agreement. But that does not exonerate Mugabe for having opted for the worst possible choice in dealing with the land distribution issue. There were, and still are, a host of alternative mechanisms available. The “quiet diplomacy” of Zimbabwe’s neighbours is nothing more than hypocrisy, and the fallout from that cowardice will affect everyone on the continent in the years to come. What goes around comes around.History has always repeated itself!
