I don’t go to church every Sunday. Some Sundays I’d rather sleep in than get my praise on, I forget to pray most nights before I go to bed and, admittedly, I use ‘the f word’ way too many times in day-to-day conversation.
I believe in God, I believe in a higher power, I believe that we’ve all got guardian angels watching out for us, rooting for us to be the happiest, healthiest and best versions of ourselves we can possibly be.
I consider myself a Christian.
But I’m not a perfect Christian.
I question a lot of things regarding religion and regarding the church, there are many things in the Bible I don’t personally agree with, and sometimes I struggle to make sense of the terror happening in the world. Like we all do.
I struggle, but no matter what happens in my life, I will never not believe in God.
I will never be able to be at ease with the fact that there are people, great people, people with families and friends and passions and hopes and dreams just like mine, who laugh at the idea of a higher power.
To me, if you’re doing this life thing right, there’s no way you can doubt the existence of a god. Whichever one it is you believe in.
See, some days you might wake up to a spirit dragging on the floor. Some days you might look at the headlines and feel a pang of mourning for people you’ll never even know. Some days life might feel terribly long and terribly cruel.
But if you look up, at just the right moment, I promise you can see God.
Everywhere.
God is in the details. The little things about life that warm your heart, that bring a smile to your face on even the worst day, that make you feel that – even when the going gets tough – things will get better.
God is in music. God is in the song that gives you goosebumps every time you listen to it, even after years. God is in the moment you hear a new song for the first time and you can’t help but tap your foot, snap your fingers, bob your head.
God is in children. God is in the face of the little girl who stares up at you in the queue in Checkers. God is in friendly baby who waves at stranger’s from her mother’s lap in a taxi. God is in the breathless giggle of a naughty two-year-old being chased by his dad.
God is in friendship. God is in the people you surround yourself with, the people who make you laugh, the people who wipe your tears, the people who pick you up every time life trips you up.
God is in the details. If you’re looking – not just seeing, but really looking – you’ll see Him. Everywhere.
