A suspected poacher poacher was on Saturday shot and killed in crossfire between members of the anti-poaching unit in the Bwabwata National Park’s Mahango Core Area.

Kavango East acting regional commander deputy commissioner Lucia Kahuure confirmed the shooting on Monday.

She said the incident happened between 09h00 to 10h00, after members of the anti-poaching unit heard a gunshot in the park the previous night, prompting the team to conduct some investigation in the park.

Kahuure said while patrolling on foot, the unit allegedly spotted fresh footprints and tracked them.

“Later, there was a crossfire, and one of the poachers was shot in the stomach and died at the scene,” she said.

She said the body of the alleged poacher, whose identity has not been confirmed yet, was later transported to the Andara Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, a 76-year-old woman was seriously injured on Sunday evening when she was hit by a moving vehicle at Mupapama village.

Kahuure said the incident took place at around 19h55, when an unknown vehicle driving from east to west on the Mupapama gravel road hit the pensioner and sped off.

She said the victim, identified as Sosiyana Maseka, was allegedly crossing the road when the accident happened.

Maseka was taken to the Rundu Intermediate Hospital.
