Swakop man arrested for hit-and-run

A man (28) has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident that occurred on Saturday around 17h20 on Ondjamba Street in Swakopmund’s Mondesa area.

Senior inspector Hilma Shomongula of the Namibian Police in the Erongo region confirmed the suspect’s arrest on Sunday.

According to witness accounts, a 28-year-old female pedestrian was crossing the road when she was struck by a pickup truck allegedly driving at high speed.

The driver reportedly applied his brakes but still hit the pedestrian, who became trapped under the vehicle. The suspect allegedly fled the scene without offering assistance or reporting the incident.

The suspect reportedly handed himself in at Mondesa Police Station on Sunday morning. He was arrested and is set to appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The victim is said to be hospitalised at Swakopmund State Hospital in serious but stable condition.

The vehicle involved was traced and impounded from the suspect’s residence.

Police investigations continue.
