The Right Tattoo

Opinions on tattoos are varying. Some may consider them taboo while others see them as a form of artistic expression. Local tattoo artists Sean Newman and Lowkey Lowkey offer some insight to those contemplating getting their first tattoo.

They share some of the safety measures to consider before getting a tattoo and reflect on the importance of seeking out a professional tattoo artist.

Newman told that those who wish to get a tattoo should take their time to evaluate the kind of tattoo they want, because the inkings are permanent. “So before you get a tattoo, it is best to realise that whatever you get is going to be part of you forever, unless you get it covered later by another tattoo or removed, thus it is important to make the right choice. Make sure it is something you really want for the rest of your life,” cautioned Newman.

Lowkey added that it is also important to have a consultation meeting with your tattoo artist before getting inked. “It really helps to sit down with your potential tattoo artist before getting tatted, where he will explain everything about tattoos as well as share different tattoo ideas and designs with you,” added Lowkey.

On safety, Newman mentioned that clients should ensure their tattoo artist wears new gloves, uses a new ink cup and most importantly uses a new needle. Newman stressed that clients getting tatted should ensure the tattoo artist opens all of these in their presence.

Newman also said that if you want to get a tattoo, you should do a bit of research on the best tattoo artists in your area and pick the one who is recommended the most.

“It is important to know about the artist’s background or portfolio because there are a lot of people out there who take chances,” said Newman.

He said that doing research on the tattoo artist’s work eliminates the chance of you getting a bad tattoo. “You cannot afford to have a mess on your body because covering up a tattoo is expensive and removing it is even more expensive,” Newman said.

Lowkey believes it is safer to pick a tattoo artist who has been recommended by many, stating there’s a reason certain artists are popular. “The reason a lot of people have recommended a specific tattoo artist is because of their good work.”

Reflecting on the importance of the meaning behind a tattoo, Newman also cautioned that prospective clients should take time to make a mature decision, because of the permanence of tattoos.

Lowkey encouraged clients never to opt for the cheapest tattoo artist, stating that good art is expensive. “You are altering your body for life and it is important that you get the right person to do it for you,” he said.

He explained that tattoo artists too should ensure that they protect themselves while tattooing their clients. Wearing new gloves, he says, is not enough when you are a tattoo artist. He mentioned that tattoo artists should make sure that their workplace is clean and conducive enough not just for their clients but themselves as well.

“Dispose of your needles safely after use because you can also hurt yourself as the artist if you are not careful,” cautioned Lowkey.
