Three men were arrested by the police at Walvis Bay on Wednesday for conspiracy to commit a robbery and displaying a fake registration number.

Erongo police commander for community affairs inspector Ileni Shapumba said the police received information about a planned robbery, and chased a Volkswagen Polo vehicle from the centre of town to Kuisebmond.

When they apprehended the suspects they found three different number plates in the car.

According to Shapumba, investigations revealed that the three men rented the Polo, tinted it’s windows and changed its number plates.

Shapumba said that attempted robbery cases where fake registration plates are used are becoming worrisome.

“It appears that there is not much control in acquiring vehicle registration plates. We request that printing shops improve control over the printing and issuing of registration plates. One should not claim a vehicle registration plate or number unless such a person is in possession of an authentic proof of ownership from Natis,” he said.
