Tigers turn on the style to beat Unam

Tigers took a step closer to the Namibia Premier League title with a 2-1 victory against Unam on Sunday.

Absalom Iimbondi gave Tigers the lead a minute into the second half, but Upengisa Ujaha equalised for Unam on 74 minutes. Tigers however finished stronger and a great strike by Jackson Johannes 10 minutes from time gave them the precious victory.

Tigers now lead the log on 60 points – 12 ahead of second placed Black Africa who have two matches in hand.

Both teams fielded former Brave Warriors strikers who had recently returned home after stints playing abroad, with Jerome Louis playing for Unam and Tangeni Shipahu coming on as a second half substitute for Tigers.

After an uneventful first half, Tigers immediately struck after the restart and it was Shipahu, who had just come on, who was the instigator. From the kickoff he turned on the pace to outsprint Unam’s defence and pass to an unmarked Absalom Iimbondi who volleyed home at the far post.

Unam came back strongly and after numerous attacks, Upengisa got the equaliser when he headed home a cross by Heini Isaacks after fine work by Jerome Louis down the right wing.

Tigers however responded like true champions and they got the victory after a great solo goal by Jackson Johannes, who beat two defenders before unleashing a 20 metre shot that hit the roof of the net.

Mighty Gunners and Tura Magic, meanwhile, both collected maximum points over the weekend to climb up to third and fourth places respectively on the log.

Gunners beat Julinho Sporting 1-0 in Otjiwarongo to move up to third place on 40 points, while Tura Magic beat African Stars 2-1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium to move up to fourth place on 39 point.

Citizens also collected maximum points after beating United Stars 3-2 and have now climbed five positions to 11th on the log.
