Zambezi and Kunene were the first teams to walk on the sloping pitch of The Oscar Norich Stadium at The Namibian Newspaper Cup but both teams failed to hit the net.
With Zambezi’s number 10, Patrick Matengu being the most watchable of all players, the Zambezi Region started the match with a potential fight but it was not long before Kunene retaliated.
The closest the match came to a goal in the first half was when Kunene chipped a free kick from close range but Zambezi’s goalkeeper was up to the challenge, pushing it wide.
The right-footed Matengu hit the crossbar a few minutes before half time.
In the second half, both teams came close to scoring but just could not convert their numerous chances. Even the substitutes from both teams could not bring about concrete results.
The biggest excitement came when Zambezi’s Sani Samataa took a tumble in the box with no opposing player close to him. The referee pointed to the spot with the large crowd showing their frustration at the wrong decision.
Zambezi’s Mayumbelo Ricky wasted the opportunity by blasting the ball well over from the penalty spot. The game ended in a draw. Experienced referee Queen Manga handled the game well and only dished out one yellow card.
Matengu’s goal attempts and ball skills earned him the Man of the Match trophy.
