Tourism ministry plans to capitalise on gambling

Indileni Daniel

The newly appointed minister of environment and tourism plans to capitalise and fully operationalise the lottery and gambling industries.

Minister Indileni Daniel says the initiative is part of the ministry’s mission to drive economic growth and generate revenue for the national treasury.

“Plans to capitalise on and fully operationalise lotteries and gambling boards, as well as the access and benefit sharing office, will be a key focus of mine. This will help generate much-needed revenue for the treasury and improve regulation of these important sectors,” she says.

The minister made these remarks during her first meeting with government officials on Tuesday.

Daniel highlighted the ministry’s direction to preserve Namibia’s natural heritage, promote sustainable tourism, and drive economic growth.

“Our collective mission remains clear, to preserve Namibia’s natural heritage, foster sustainable tourism, and drive economic growth while ensuring environmental responsibility,” she said.

She also emphasised president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s stance that delays in implementing government decisions will not be tolerated.

The minister added that upcoming adjustments in the ministry would align with Swapo’s 2024 election manifesto and its corresponding implementation plan.

“There are targets in our manifesto that must be met within the timelines prescribed in the implementation plan,” she stressed.

Daniel highlighted the importance of Namibia’s natural resources such as wildlife and protected areas as key drivers of tourism and economic self-sufficiency.

She also prioritised attracting new investments to diversify and sustain the industry.

“This is necessary to stimulate the local economy by redefining the tourism landscape and promoting greater socio-economic inclusion,” she added.

The minister emphasised the need for communities to benefit from tourism and natural resources through value addition and diversification.
