The Namibia Revolutionary Transport and Manufacturing Union (Naretu) has congratulated the media union on its registration.
The Office of the Labour Commissioner recognised the Namibia Media Professionals Union (Nampu) as a trade union on Monday morning, four years after Nampu’s launch.
In a statement issued on Monday, Naretu head Petersen Kambinda said the establishment of Nampu as a formal union is a powerful statement of solidarity among media practitioners.
It signifies a collective commitment to advocating for the rights, safety and welfare of journalists and media workers, who play a vital role in informing and empowering the public,” he said.
Kambinda hopes that the union will serve as a beacon of support, fostering an environment where members can share ideas, seek assistance and work collaboratively towards common goals.
“It must never be reduced to individuals and a vehicle for individual battles, but rather a collective voice for workers in the media sector,” the statement reads.
Kambinda highlighted that in challenging times, the media landscape continually evolves and the need for a unified front is more critical than ever.
“Your efforts to create a strong, organised collective will better position you to address the issues faced by media professionals, whether related to job security, ethical standards or creative freedom,” he said.
