The trial of a farmworker accused of murdering his employer at Tallismanus settlement in the Omaheke region in September 2022 will commence in the Windhoek High Court on Tuesday.
Rodney Hoxobeb (29) briefly appeared in the Windhoek High Court on Monday. He stands accused of brutally killing Christof Mungunda, a farmer at Tallismanus, before taking off with his Toyota pick-up.
According to the indictment, Hoxobeb had been employed as a general farmworker on the deceased’s farm since July 2022.
It is alleged that an argument erupted between Mungunda and Hoxobeb on 16 September 2022, after which he reportedly informed his girlfriend of his intention to kill Mungunda.
“During the evening hours of the same day, the accused took a wooden axe handle and attacked the unarmed deceased, who was walking back to his farmhouse after switching off a generator. The accused hit the deceased multiple times over the head, neck and body with the axe handle,” the indictment reads.
Realising that Mungunda was still alive, Hoxobeb took a rock and threw it onto the deceased’s head, the state alleges.
According to a postmortem report, Mungunda died on the scene due to blunt-force trauma to his head.
It is further alleged that Hoxobeb took the vehicle of the deceased and fled the scene with his girlfriend and her cousin.
Hoxobeb reportedly also drove into his co-worker while attempting to flee.
“While driving, the accused consumed alcohol and became intoxicated, and he continued driving the vehicle recklessly on the public roads in the Kanaan location,” the state alleges.
Hoxobeb faces charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, reckless driving, driving without a driving licence, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
