Tributes are pouring in on social media following the sudden death of popular South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo (51) on Tuesday.

Khumalo became a household name in the regional music industry for her hit song ‘Live My Life’. Her death has sent shock waves across southern Africa, where she was loved by many for her exceptional singing talent.

Family spokesperson Tshephi Rakeepile confirmed that Khumalo died on Tuesday after a short illness.

Rakeepile says the Soweto-born singer died on her way to hospital to seek medical attention.

“But unfortunately, on their drive to the hospital, that’s when she passed away, because when they arrived at the hospital, they pronounced her death on arrival,” she says.

Khumalo’s death has left the family in deep sorrow and the entertainment industry mourning.

She is survived by her daughter, singer Rethabile Khumalo, and her son Thabo Khumalo, who she had with the late boxing champion Dingaan Thobela. She also leaves behind three grandchildren.

The cause of Khumalo’s death is not known at the moment.

Following her death, industry mates, fans and supporters flooded to social media with tributes, expressing shock and sadness.

Kalawa Jazmee Records, the record label that Khumalo worked with, described her as a true icon who made a remarkable contribution to the South African music scene.

The record label notes that she was a “true icon” for inspiring many with her powerful voice and unforgettable performances.

“Her passion, talent and dedication to her craft have left an indelible mark on the industry and in the hearts of her fans,” says a statement by Kalawa Jazmee Records.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and fans during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Winnie Khumalo,” the label adds.

Music producer @djmahoota took to Instagram to express sadness over Khumalo’s death.
