Trusting NDP to lead the country remains unlikely – political analyst

Political analyst Ndumba Kamwanyah says although Namibians appreciate National Democratic Party leader Martin Lukato for his personality, trusting the party to deliver major reforms or lead the country remains unlikely.

This comes as the party is expected to launch its manifesto on Sunday.

Kamwanyah says if the party wants to be taken seriously, it would need to present a more grounded and practical approach to issues such as the growing role of oil, gas, and green hydrogen, while demonstrating real capacity to govern.

“Tate Lukato is a well-loved figure in Namibian politics, known for his unique presence. While he sometimes raises important issues, he is often not taken seriously by voters, who consider him more of a comedic figure than a viable candidate,” he says.

He adds: “However, his manifesto is still expected to touch on critical issues such as rural development, land reform, and uplifting marginalised communities”.

Kamwanyah says, historically, voters have not taken the NDP seriously enough to entrust them with their votes in significant numbers.

“While he does raise critical issues, his party is often seen as lacking political influence and resources to deliver on its promises,” he says.
