The Tsumeb municipality has announced that it is undertaking major maintenance on the town’s main water reservoir, the Tupperware Dam.
This comes after months of struggling to provide the town with water that meets standards for human consumption.
In December, Dundee Precious Metals detected a high level of microorganisms in the town’s water.
The municipality has since conducted its own investigation, but the laboratory results have not been made public yet.
On Friday, the municipality issued a statement to say maintenance of the dam will commence on Monday, 24 April.
The project is expected to continue until the end of June and may cause low water supply and pressure to several areas, including Tsumeb Proper, Tsumeb East, Kuvukiland, Ondundu, and Tsumeb Extensions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7.
The maintenance will involve the replacement of the dam lining, which sources at the town claim was last done in 2010.
Lining replacement should be done every 10 years.
The exercise will require bypassing the water supply system from the dam.
The municipality advises residents in the affected areas to store water as a precaution while the maintenance is ongoing and to use water sparingly during this period.
Residents with critical needs at essential service centres, including hospitals, schools, and clinics, are urged to contact 067 221004, 081 146 0012 or 085 717 1047.
