Tsumeb teenager arrested for infanticide

A GRADE 10 pupil was arrested after she gave birth to a baby boy and killed him on Sunday, at the Oshikoto Senior Secondary school hostel in Tsumeb.

According to the Oshikoto regional police commander, commissioner Teopoline Kalompo-Nashikaku, the 19-year-old pupil was arrested and is detained at the Nomtsoub Police Station in Tsumeb.

“It is alleged that the pupil gave birth to a baby boy in the hostel toilet, killed it and wrapped the body in a plastic bag, and placed the bag in a backpack which she hid it in the toilet. The bag was found by the hostel matron after she was tipped-off by some pupils at the school,” Kalompo-Nashikaku said.

After she gave birth alone, the other pupils heard the baby crying and when they alerted the matron about it, it was too late to save the baby.

She added that the suspect is expected to appear in the Tsumeb Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Wednesday).
