Two people died in a car accident near Oshikango on Saturday morning while the driver was allegedly fleeing from the police.

The incident reported by the police in the Ohangwena region took place on the Oshikango-Edundja road.

The driver of the seven-seater, who was carrying two passengers and containers of ‘smuggled’ fuel, allegedly spotted a police vehicle and tried to speed off to avoid arrest.

“The driver lost control of his vehicle when he tried to flee upon seeing police ahead of him. He was driving in Oshikango, but suddenly detoured when he saw a police vehicle. One of his passengers died at the scene of the accident, while the other died on arrival at the Oshakati hospital,” said Ohangwena police crime investigations coordinator Zacharias Amakali.

Amakali said the driver, who only holds a learner’s licence, attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was arrested and is set to appear in the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
