Two earthquakes strike Namibia: residents urged to stay safe

The Ministry of Mines and Energy say two earthquakes occurred over the weekend.

One occurred approximately 27km south west of Gross Barmen on 9 November at 09h03, and another south west of Opuwo on 10 November.

This was confirmed by a press statement released on Monday.

According to the statement, the two events were recorded by eight local seismic stations from Gobabis, Windhoek, Kamanjab, Rundu, Katima Mulilo, Opuwo, Aus and Ariamsvlei.

“The events were also recorded by three other regional seismic stations from the South African Seismological network,” the statement read.

The ministry has advised that in the event of an earthquake, if you find yourself indoors, try going outside if possible, otherwise find refuge under a table. If you are outdoors, find a spot clear of buildings, trees and powerlines.

They urged citizens to stay away from windows and watch out for falling objects.
