Two test negative for Congo fever

A 77-YEAR-OLD man from Onethika village in the Oshikoto region, who died last Tuesday and a patient from Outapi, tested negative for Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever.

National surveillance officer on the spread of diseases in the ministry of health, Selma Robert told The Namibian that no virus was detected in both cases, however, the ministry is still investigating the cause of the elderly man’s death.

He was a neighbour to the 54-year-old woman who has been the only confirmed Congo fever case in the country.

Robert said the elderly man fitted the case description for the virus but they are not able to determine what caused his death.

“We got more information from his widow that he was complaining about his health deteriorating,” she said adding that the man had not been eating well.

Although the deceased had history of tick bites, Robert said, his death could have been caused by another tick-borne disease.

She further said results of the suspected cases from Windhoek, Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions are still pending.
