Uganda win Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series

Uganda won the Capricorn Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series after beating Namibia by three runs in a thrilling final on Tuesday. 

After electing to bat first Uganda scored 93 for five wickets off their 20 overs and then restricted Namibia to 90/5 in a match that went down to the wire. 

In Uganda’s innings, Kevin Awino was run out early on for 2, and although Prosscovia Alako and Janet Mbabazi revived the innings with a 29-run partnership, Kayleen Green struck with two wickets in four balls.

She bowled Alako for 14 and dismissed Mbabazi for 18 to leave Uganda struggling at 35/3 after 11,4 overs.

Stephani Nampiina and Immaculate Nakisuuyi, however, rebuilt Uganda’s innings with a 32-run partnership, before Green once again struck to dismiss Nampiina for 22. 

Nakisuuyi remained not out on 26 as Uganda recovered to reach 93/5 off their 20 overs. 

Green was Namibia’s best bowler, taking three wickets for 22 runs. 

In reply, Namibia lost Sune Wittmann early on for 5, and when Adri van der Merwe was run out for 12 off a direct hit by Nampiina they were 28/2 after seven overs. 

Uganda turned on the pressure with some excellent fielding as Arrasta Diergaadt was also run out for 6, and when Alumo dismissed Wilka Mwatile for 7, Namibia had reached 50/4 just past the halfway stage of their innings. 

Opener Yasmeen Khan and Kayleen Green rebuilt Namibia’s innings with an unbeaten 40-run partnership, but the batting was a bit slow and when they reached the final over they still needed 13 runs for victory. 

They made a valiant effort, scoring nine runs off the final over, but the target was just out of reach as Uganda held on for a thrilling win. Khan remained not out on 40 off 52 balls while Green was not out on 11.

Alumo was Uganda’s top bowler, taking 2/8 off three overs, but Nampiina won the player of the match award for her fine batting and fielding displays. 

Earlier the third place play-off between UAE and Hong Kong was cancelled due to rain. 

Namibia finished the quadrangular round robin tournament on top of the log with 10 points, followed by Uganda on six, and UAE and Hong Kong on four points each. 

Theertha Satish of the UAE was the top run scorer of the tournament with 220 runs in six innings’ at an average of 36,66, followed by Kavisha Egodage of UAE with 145 runs at anaverage of 24,16, and Prosscovia Alako of Uganda with 135 runs at an average of 19,28. 

Mariko Hill of Hong Kong was fourth with 132 runs at an average of 22,00, while Namibia’s Adri van der Merwe was fifth with 121 runs at an average of 20,16. 

Namibia’s Kayleen Green was the top wicket taker with 13 wickets at an average of 8,30, followed by Betty Chan of Hong Kong (11 wickets at an average of 9,18) and Irene van Zyl of Namibia with 10 wickets at an average of 10,70.

Namibian allrounder Wilka Mwatile won the player of the tournament award after scoring 85 runs at an average of 28,33 and taking seven wickets at an average of 13,28.
